Saving time and deepening knowledge
Over the past 10 years, I have noticed a significant increase in the number of patients on multiple medications (many times multiple pages of medications!) and have found it to be overwhelming at times. I used to spend a great deal of time during patient care running into my office to research interactions and the effects of these medications on dental treatment. This often consisted of thumbing through the index of a book and locating each medicine one at a time.
For the past 2 years I have been using Lexicomp Online for Dentistry on almost a daily basis to do this research. I am able to quickly input the medications and instantly receive clear and concise explanations of interactions and effects on dental treatment. I have found that the website ... has led me to a better understanding of how to manage medically compromised patients.
Specifics things I have relied on the website for:
Current info and recommendations on the prevention and treatment of bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis
- Current recommendations on SBE prophylaxis and a better understanding on little nuances from drug choice, to managing multiple appointments, to managing patients currently on antibiotics
- Updated FDA recommendations for prescribing products containing Acetaminophen and NSAIDs
- Dosing adjustments in patients with kidney or liver failure
- Guidelines for proper antibiotic selection during different stages/ types of infection
There has been more than one occasion when I have become aware of medical conditions a patient failed to report because of what the website told me about medicines they are on.

Treating patients ... beyond the dental office
I work in geriatrics and use the Lexicomp Online for Dentistry live database and interaction checker every day while I am in practice. Often, my patients call me at home to have me run an analysis on their medications - especially when they have received a new medication - and I often print out patient information sheets for them.
Recently, I had a patient who had months of suffering from a chronic cough, and a consultation with a specialist and bronchoscopy did not yield any helpful results. Using the online database, I found the information that her ACE inhibitor for hypertension caused chronic cough, printed out the drug monograph, and showed it to the patient. She was amazed that the answer about a common side effect of a medication was so easy to find, and she was amazed that her physician didn't know about this common problem. She was so grateful that we were able to pinpoint the cause of her problem, and we referred her back to her physician to have her medication switched to another antihypertensive medication from a different class to eliminate her cough. She recovered completely, and now has better quality of life.

Sense of security
I have a pharmacy right next door to my office. The pharmacist is very helpful, but I feel more comfortable being able to confirm what he is telling me ... The sense of secure confidence that I am able to provide the safest, most effective prescriptions, minimizing drug interactions or risks to medically compromised patients in a continually shifting information landscape, is well worth the subscription price of Lexicomp.

Lexicomp a 'lifesaver'
Prior to (Lexicomp), I used my little drug book. It was not easy. It would take too long. Since then, Lexicomp has made life easy. I can look drugs up, look at interactions with other medications. This has been a life saver.

There isn't a spectacular story of a dramatic save. Having the data bases available to help with discussion, diagnosis, and treatment has been a great help for years. Thank you.

Uncovering overlooked prescribing errors
We routinely check patients' medication lists through the Lexicomp Online for Dentistry database. We have found numerous situations where patients are taking meds prescribed by different physicians that not only "work against each other," but can have dangerous interactions. When notified, the physicians are always embarrassed, but grateful.

To sedate or not to sedate?
In our practice, we have a large focus on oral sedation and see patients on a lot of meds. Lexicomp gives me confidence in doing procedures on patients knowing any potential drug interactions, but more importantly it lets me know when to NOT do sedation on a patient due to potential drug interactions. With so many patients being on so many meds these days ... many times new unknown meds to me, I feel like Lexicomp really covers my back end and keeps me, and more importantly my patients, out of trouble.

Keeping patients — and students — informed
I have entered a complete list of patient's meds, seen conflicting prescriptions that could be health risks for my patient and contacted their MD ... with the MD immediately getting them in to change the (prescriptions) they weren't aware other medical providers had made for the patient. We were able to clear up some of their symptoms by having the Rxs changed.
... (Patients) receive printouts after they ask me what I know about a drug and any impact it would have on their dental care. (They) have been impressed with the fact we have access to this info and are willing to share it for their benefit. It also makes my practice look like we are ... staying up with technology and provide them current, cutting edge care.
I wouldn't want to be without my Lexicomp. I teach part-time at a local dental residency program ... having access to my Lexicomp account has been invaluable for me when residents ask me questions about prescriptions and the patients they are treating.

Easy and integrated
As you know, oral and maxillofacial surgeons get the medically compromised patients every day. It is great to have a tool that integrates with my office software and that allows for a quick and thorough review of the patient's medications.

No compromise on safety
I have been practicing for almost 27 years, and when it comes to patient care and safety, there is no compromise. My patients ... trust that not only will I provide them excellent care, but they need to feel safe. I use Lexicomp routinely, especially when I need to know what my patient's medications are and how that may affect my treatment planning, referring protocols, and sedation approach. There is no substitute for what I benefit in having Lexicomp Online for Dentistry available when I need it. Patients are assured when I generate a report showing not only all their existing medications, but the ones I plan on providing them as well. They know I have done my homework. Lexicomp make me look good to my patients, staff, and other dental and medical providers.

Double checking and Drug ID
I absolutely love Lexcomp Online for Dentistry. Every time I do a health history or update with medications, I simply log on to find any potential interactions with anesthetics. I also do the same before prescribing medicines. It's great to know I am always looking up the latest information, and it really beats having to look up all the medications separately. I've also found the Drug ID section useful to help find drugs when the patient knows what they take the pill for and the color and shape, but not the name ... an all too common problem. I wouldn't want to practice without this powerful tool.

Useful literature and lesion diagnosis
We routinely use Lexicomp Online for Dentistry to input patients' medications and check for any reactions or complications we need to be aware of before providing dental treatment. We also use the dental literature source to help diagnose and medicate where applicable for soft tissue lesions. It is a simple, fast reference.

Mantra: 'Look it up on Lexicomp'
PDR? What a waste of time! Our five-doc practice needs info now, on the screen ready to use in a format that staff can access quickly. [Lexicomp Online for Dentistry] streamlines the sedation protocol and allows all staff to input correct info easily and effortlessly.
"Look it up on Lexicomp!" We have been using it for years.
Pharmacist: "They don't make it."
Dentist: "Lexicomp says it's available."
Pharmacist: "Actually, they make it, but we don't carry it."
Love it. Must have!

'A progressive tool'
The program is a progressive tool that enhances our practice of dentistry. Thanks for helping us shine!

I just subscribed a week (before I) had the occasion to use the program. In a timely manner, I looked up a script for a medication and also received a warning about not prescribing a systemic form without a positive culture test result from a lab.
I have a lot to learn about how to use the program and look forward to that process.
